Daily Motivation to Overcome Procrastination and Be Productive
Although most people know you as the best in the industry, being among the world’s contender for procrastination awards will not make you realize your actual potential.
Procrastination is delaying a task until the stipulated time is either at hand, or has ended. Developing the daily motivation tools to inspire you to overcome procrastination is an essential professional development skill you need to learn.
There are many reasons why a person would procrastinate:
- A task is deemed unpleasant, overwhelming, or unnecessary: Nobody likes to do an unpleasant task, and some tasks are put on hold because a person sees no immediate reason why it should be done. Others may simply put off a job for a while because he sees the task simply too big for him to start and to finish.
- Fear: fear can really prevent a person from moving towards an action. Some put off a task because they will be forced to go into a place or scenario that they have no knowledge of. Another is fear of change. A task that puts a person out of his comfort zone is certainly taken on last when other familiar activities are lined up no matter how important it is.
- Perfectionism: if you know that you cannot do the job perfectly, you put it off as much as possible. This may be due of lack of skill or lack of knowledge on how to tackle the job well and good.
- Fear of failure: brother to perfectionism, this is the fear of being branded as a failure of a project. If you see yourself failing to do a task right, you will simply put it off in favor of other tasks that you know you can succeed in.
- Disorganization: your time table is as messed up as your work station. Clutter in an agenda or in an immediate environment simply saps your creative juices, and makes you all the more tightly wrung. This prevents you from acting on things that needed to be done so that time is given on other projects. Often times, you end up finishing 3 jobs in a day that could have been done in three separate days with less stress because you have totally destroyed your rhythm of things.
Overcoming Procrastination:
Being motivated to do something and acting on it takes as much time as you have used to develop procrastinating. The habit of procrastinating is simply not done overtime. It is made through small series of habitually putting off work until it becomes a normal part of life. Procrastination does not only happen in a workplace. It can also occur in your home, or at school, and even in a personal relationship.
First, you must admit you are a habitual procrastinator. It needs to be accepted as a problem before it gets to be addressed. You cannot solve a problem if you don’t see it as a problem. Once you have accepted that your habit of procrastination is pulling you back from being a successful person, and then you may start finding ways on how to go about this problem and start to become productive.
Set your goal for the day and do your best to satisfy your objectives. Problem with expert procrastinators, they are very good in establishing daily goals but can’t seem to do satisfy them until it gets all covered up with too much work. Tap into your sense of integrity and stay true with your goal.
Plan your day and stick to your time table. Planning makes sure you allot enough time for each task at hand. Make sure that you set the right amount of time for each task.
Having too much time for something will make you have extra time to procrastinate. Having less time for another leaves you feeling overwhelmed, making you feel like holding it back for a couple of days to have “enough time for it.
If fear of failure or wanting perfection is putting you back, then have the confidence in your abilities and have faith in yourself that you can do the task right and proper. You cannot know that you don’t have the right skills to do the job unless you try it.
If you do find out that you lack the skills for completing the job, then there is no harm in telling this to your superior and asking for help from someone who is skilled in doing it. Doing a new job opens up a new perspective on your strengths and weaknesses and it can be an avenue for professional growth.
If a task seems too overwhelming, break it into several stages. Sometimes looking at a project in as a whole can really be overwhelming. You will be able to focus your attention on certain areas of the assignment, and this can result to a better performance and better decision-making.
Don’t take on too much work at a time. Be honest on what you can do, and accept only what you know that can be done within a reasonable amount of time. Having work that is too overwhelming will only result to high levels of stress that you normally would want to stay away from.
Don’t do things too fast, too soon, and don’t give too much of your personal time on them either. You need to rest, and do consider it a privilege to have reasonable rests in between.
If you find that your brain is no longer functioning, go out and have a short, 5-minute walk along the corridors in the guise of looking for someone or something that is not in your work station. Just make sure not to spend too much time walking around, for that already would be procrastinating. What you need to do is to refresh your mind, and not to find an excuse not to continue working for the day.
Sometimes, procrastinating is initiated by another procrastinator. If you are lucky to have a personal office and a personal assistant, leave a message that only the top brass can disturb you.
If there are other friends and co-workers wanting to have a word, tell your assistant to take their messages and get back to them when you’re done. If you don’t have the luxury of both, just hang a do not disturb sign by your cubicle or just tell your co-workers that you’re busy and wish not to be disturbed for a couple of hours unless it’s a dire emergency.
Hopefully, these steps will help you get a head start in changing your life. Just augment a few changes here and there so that you can apply the changes in your home and in your personal life.
Noting is much worse than you looking a few years back, thinking you would have been better off that you are now if you just changed your ways to become productive.
